How often does Garmin update its maps?

My Garmin maps are really out of date and I’ve gone to the Garmin website to update my maps, but nothing has changed (I’ve had my Garmin for about a year). Do you know how often Garmin updates its maps, and how are you supposed to know when the maps are updated?

I didn’t know you could update your maps by going to their website. I have seen updated CD’s at Best Buy for Garmin that you purchase for about $ 50 and then using your PC you can update your Garmin.
